JLIC Camp

ENGLISH AND CANADIAN CULTURE

The goal of the camp is to provide a natural English language and cultural environment for overseas students whose first language is not English. In order to get students exposed to the Canadian culture and its people, JL International Centre will arrange for the students to stay with friendly Canadian families, and will organize a variety of cultural activities and field trips. Experienced instructors will teach English, and introduce one to Canadian culture by taking students to the various local historical and cultural sites. After the camp, students will return to their home country with lasting impressions of the country, improved English, and a better understanding of Canada and its people.

Language Programs

The mission of JL International Centre (J.L.I.C.) is to promote Chinese culture and multiculturalism in Canada.

We teach students Chinese language  through classroom instructions, activities, and other extracurricular events. We aim to provide an innovated Chinese language program through our Chinese classes and private language tutors. With our experienced instructors, students will not only be learning Chinese and enjoying our Chinese tutoring service, but also learn about the business aspects of Chinese culture and explore opportunities in one of the fastest growing economies in the world. we believe we can better serve the growing demand for Chinese classes in Greater Toronto Area.

J.L.I.C. has developed a series of Chinese programs, which is systematically designed and able to meet the different needs of learners from different age groups. Classes are conducted by using educational games, class activities and through teamwork. We focus on motivating students' incentive to learn so that they will become actively involved in class activities and enthusiastic in learning Chinese.

We hire experienced instructors with high qualifications in teaching Chinese. We offer Cantonese  and Mandarin classes, the two major Chinese dialects used in Ontario. We also teach students how to recognize traditional Chinese characters and simplified ones.

Beginning from September 2004, we also operate a range of interest classes such as French and English courses for both adults and children.  Our Math and English Talent Classes are likewise welcome by parents who desire to raise the potential levels of their children.

J.L.I.C. Chinese Programs:

J.L.I.C. Chinese offers two systematic teaching courses:

  • Adult/teen group lessons

  • Children ( 6- 14 yrs old) group lessons.

All group-lessons are divided into three levels: beginner, intermediate and advanced.

1) Beginner class

The students in this class will learn Chinese basics including; Pinying, tones, character recognition, basic Chinese writing strokes, Chinese character typing, dictionary use, and conversational skills.

2) Intermediate class

Students with 2~3 years of Chinese language education will learn to read and write short journals and make presentations in Chinese on selected topics. The students will have classes in Chinese culture, history and geography through written and multimedia materials.

3) Advanced class

Students with at least 5 years of Chinese language education will develop further language proficiency in Chinese. Based on a solid understanding of Chinese culture, history and geography, the students will present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience on a variety of topics, and demonstrate understanding of the nature of language through comparison of the Chinese language with their native language. They will be able to express themselves by utilizing strong Chinese skills of  “how, what and when” in fluent Chinese. It will lay a solid language foundation for their future work and study in the target language environment.

Children ( 6- 14 yrs old) group lessons:

This program is especially designed for the middle school students who do not attend any Chinese based after-school programs. The teaching standard will be same as the adult program, but with adaptive methods specifically targeting the needs of the age group.
These programs will require 3-5 years depending on students’ performance. The students are highly encouraged to have a minimum of 2 hrs of class and 2-4 hrs a week of practice at home. For the students who plan to take AP Chinese in high school, the adult/teen program is highly recommended.

Business Chinese Program

We not only help you to master Chinese language, but also help you to

  • Become familiarized with your Chinese customers - We tailor our language instruction so that you will become familiar with Chinese customers' expectations, their concerns, their needs, as well as insights from local competitors.

  • Manage Chinese employees more effectively - Our customized program allows you to communicate more effectively with Chinese employees by incorporating Chinese corporate customs and business cultures into yours, as well as advice on interpersonal relationships between friends and employees.

  • Communicate powerfully in China - Communications in Chinese business culture are not undertaken as directly as is done in a North American business setting. Our instructors will teach you ways to communicate confidently in China.

All the instructors at J.L.I.C. are announcers at Chinese radio or television stations both in Canada and in China, and their pronunciation is standard and flawless. In addition, as journalists and announcers, they are experts about Chinese culture and public relations in China.

AP Chinese Program & SAT II Prep Program

The College Board, which offers talented high school students a chance to earn college credits, announced it will offer an Advanced Placement program in Chinese language and culture.

The first AP Chinese Language and Culture courses will be offered worldwide in the fall of 2006, followed by the exam in May of 2007.

The AP Chinese Exam will assess students' interpersonal communication skills, their abilities to present and interpret language in spoken and written forms, and their functional familiarity with Chinese culture.

"Our education system needs to respond to an increasingly interconnected global economy and to the growing cultural diversity in the United States," said College Board President Gaston Caperton, speaking Friday at a Washington news conference.

The AP Chinese Language and Culture course and examination is based on Mandarin/Putonghua Chinese.

The exam will provide its questions using both traditional and simplified characters, enabling students with knowledge of either type of characters to take the exam. Similarly, student responses using either set of characters will be accepted.

The advance placement program allows high school students to pursue college-level studies, offering 34 courses and exams in 19 subjects. Depending on their performance, students can earn college credits or placement into advanced classes.

More than 1 million students at more than 14,000 high schools took at least one advanced placement exam in the past year.

Writing and Speaking Program

Private tutoring will be available for any student who has special needs.  Special arrangements are required with some flexibility of times and dates.
